7 Signs Your MacBook Battery Needs Replacement
MacBook batteries are consumables — they're designed to be replaced after a few years of daily use. The trick is knowing when. Catch a failing battery early and it's a quick, affordable fix; ignore it and a swollen battery can damage your trackpad, keyboard, or logic board. Here are the seven signs we tell customers in Goa to watch for.
1. macOS says "Service Recommended"
Click the battery icon in your menu bar (or check System Settings → Battery → Battery Health). If it says "Service Recommended", macOS has already decided the battery has degraded significantly. That's your clearest signal.
2. Battery percentage drops in jumps
Healthy batteries drain smoothly. If yours falls from 60% to 35% in minutes, or dies at 20%, the battery's cells can no longer report or hold charge reliably.
3. The MacBook shuts down without warning
Random shutdowns on battery power — especially under load — mean the battery can't deliver stable voltage anymore. If your Mac only runs properly when plugged in, the battery is effectively done.
4. The trackpad feels stiff or the case is bulging
This is the urgent one. A swelling battery pushes up against the trackpad and keyboard from inside. If your trackpad has stopped clicking properly, the bottom case doesn't sit flat, or there's a visible gap — stop using the machine and bring it in. A swollen lithium battery is a safety risk, and continued use damages surrounding components.
5. Cycle count is past its rated life
Check → About This Mac → System Report → Power. Most modern MacBooks are rated for 1,000 charge cycles. Past that, capacity typically falls off quickly.
6. It gets unusually hot doing light work
A degraded battery makes the whole power system work harder. If browsing and email make the underside hot and fans loud, the battery is often the culprit.
7. Runtime has collapsed
If a charge that used to last a workday now barely survives two hours, capacity loss has crossed the point where a replacement pays for itself in usability.
