AirPods Not Working? Common Problems & What Can Be Repaired

AirPods fail in frustratingly vague ways — one side goes quiet, the case stops charging, the sound turns muffled. Before you write yours off, know this: many AirPods problems are repairable, and several of the most common ones you can even fix at home. Here's how we triage them at our Panaji counter.

Try these first (five minutes, free)

  1. Clean the ear tips and speaker mesh. Earwax and Goa's humidity are the #1 cause of "my AirPod is quieter on one side." Use a dry soft brush — never liquids poked into the mesh.
  2. Clean the case contacts. The small metal rings at the bottom of each case slot collect lint and oxide. A dry cotton bud restores charging more often than you'd think.
  3. Reset the AirPods. Hold the case button until the light flashes amber then white, and re-pair. This clears most connection drops and one-sided audio glitches.

If those don't fix it, the fault is physical — read on.

Problems that need professional repair

One AirPod completely dead or crackling

A dead driver or corroded internal connection — common after sweat-heavy use or a monsoon soaking. Repairable in most cases; we test the driver and clean corrosion internally.

Battery dies in under an hour

AirPods batteries are tiny and wear out in 2–3 years of daily use. Heavy degradation shows as one pod dying long before the other. Battery service can bring runtime back — worth it on AirPods Pro especially.

Charging case not charging (or not charging the pods)

Cases fail more often than the pods themselves — dead case batteries, broken charging ports, and corroded pod contacts are all serviceable faults.

Dropped in water

Same rule as iPhones: the faster it's opened and cleaned, the better the odds. Don't charge them, don't put them in the case (it pushes power into wet circuits) — bring them straight in. Our guide to water-damage first aid applies to AirPods too.

Repair or replace? An honest answer

For standard AirPods with one minor fault, repair is usually well under the cost of a new pair. For a pair with multiple failures — both batteries dead and a broken case — replacement can genuinely be the better deal, and we'll tell you so at the free diagnosis. What we don't recommend: cheap "AirPods-style" clones as a substitute; the audio and battery quality aren't in the same league.
